Job purpose

The BorgWarner Arden campus offers two world class technical centers and a cutting-edge manufacturing facility that designs and produces turbos and fan drives for the automotive industry. The Arden campus offers a multitude of career opportunities and is in the beautiful mountains of Western North Carolina.

This position will perform electronic system and motor product development, calibration, and validation.

System and module development with validation leading to system integration for automotive OEM applications meeting appropriate market requirements for functionality, durability, reliability, and cost.

Key responsibilities

  • Owner for motor /generator system including safety, electronics, mechatronics
    • Validation requirements: Thermal, vibration, mechanical, NVH, analysis
  • Development and support electric high speed motor and power electronics technology.  This includes application selection guidance, validation, controller tuning, and system trouble shooting.
  • Create test plans and results for electrical hardware and motors.
  • Electronics evaluation from a performance, hardware, and microprocessor software standpoint.  This includes the ability to use and interpret LIN, SENT, CAN and PWM communication protocols.
  • Review EMI / EMC test plans and results for electrical hardware and motors.
  • Oversight and management of the design and validation of power electronic controllers.
  • Determine functional requirements for product hardware and software including electric motor, power electronics, cooling methods, and performance criteria.
  • Lead Root Cause Analysis, DFMEA, and DVP&R activities for any electrical product design or quality issues occurring before and after start of production.  Drive oversight of suppliers to implement corrective action and develop future component improvements.

What we’re looking for

Required:

  • Bachelors of Science in Mechatronics, Mechanical, or Electrical Engineering with 5+ years development, validation, or calibration experience with automotive or industrial electric motors & controls.
  • Fundamentally sound electrical engineering knowledge with the ability to adapt to new environments.
  • Self-starter that can lead projects with minimal oversight.
  • Knowledge of motors & inverters
  • Knowledge of control systems fundamentals
  • Knowledge of automotive wiring systems.
  • Software calibration knowledge with a hardware background.
  • Knowledge of CAN communication protocol
  • Understanding of 400-850VDC voltage functional safety
  • Working knowledge with international standards compliance such as UL, IEEE, NEC, and IEC
  • Experience with motor inverter calibration
  • Familiarity with electrical test equipment including oscilloscopes, power analyzers, and multimeters as well as a basic understanding of electrical safety.
  • Understanding of switched reluctance, induction, and permanent magnet motor design & control for both high and low speed applications as well as speed and position sensor technology.
  • Appreciation of electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) design methods and validation testing.
  • Knowledge of PCB schematics and power circuit analysis with the ability to review layout designs based on electronic design standards and best practices.
  • Project Management skills including the ability to demonstrate logical analysis and clear communication.
  • Ability to coordinate engineering development with individuals in multiple locations / time zones.
  • Ability to manage suppliers and external resources when procuring development hardware or developing new processes.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to coordinate testing. 
  • Background in product design, development, validation, and testing.
  • Ability to work on project teams as the key technical representative and possesses good communication skills
  • Proficient with Microsoft office products — Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Project.
  • Experience writing technical statements of work (SOW).

Preferred:

  • MSME or MS in Mechatronics MSEE with 10+ years design and development experience with automotive or industrial electric motors & controls.
  • Understanding of the challenges of applying electronic components to harsh applications, principal failure modes, means to mitigate these, and the methods for validation.
  • Strong understanding of switched reluctance, induction, and permanent magnet motor design & control for both high and low speed applications.
  • Six Sigma and Functional Safety experience
